Friday Practice Stage Details
Friday's practice stage provides an informal setting for interviews and photo
opportunities for members of the working press to meet the stars of SCCA
ProRally. All attending Press & VIPs must be credentialed prior to leaving
for the stage.
Please understand that this is not a closed "press" stage, but rather a
working shakedown stage for the entrants. Also, only HARD CARDED Press
members will be allowed on-stage. All other "event-only" press will be
allowed only to spectator areas. See full Credential Policy Change Information
below.
Selected entries (driver/co-driver):
· 2002 John Woolf Cup winner David Higgins and co-driver Daniel Barritt go
for consecutive win number three in 2003 after sweeping Sno*Drift and Rim of
the World in the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
· Driver Paul Choiniere, who is second all-time in career Rally victories,
will make his 2003 Open Class debut at STPR. He will team up with Jeff Becker
in the only Hyundai entered for competition.
· 2001 Overall Driver and Manufacturer Champion Mark Lovell and 2002 Grant
Whitaker Cup (top overall co-driver) Steve Turvey are looking for their first
win of 2003 after placing second at Rim of the World in the No. 4 2004 Subaru
Impreza.
· Currently second in the John Woolf Cup standings behind teammate Higgins,
2002 2-WD Champion Lauchlin O'Sullivan, with co-driver Christian Edstrom, is
a strong candidate to pick up his first win in Open Class action in his 2003
Lancer Evo.
· The tightest current point battle in all classes belongs to Group N where
Mark Utecht and Jeff Secor look to continue their hot start to the 2003 season
in the No. 83 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX. The pair are in a deadlock with Shane
Mitchell and Paul Donnelly. After Utecht and Secor beat them at Sno*Drift,
Mitchell and Donnelly returned the favor at Rim of the World. Mitchell and
Donnelly are in the No. 45 Subaru Impreza.
Additional news interest:
· Any number of weather conditions could affect the outcome of the race.
Historically, STPR has been clouded in dust. However, Mother Nature can also
create major difficulties for teams in other ways. In 2001, a rainstorm that
began at the second service completely changed much of the finishing order
throughout the entire field with muddy roads that became as slick as ice.
· While Susquehannock Trail is geologically different in every way from
last month's Rim of the World, with its fast, smooth and well-groomed roads,
the event does, none-the-less, also have a history of high attrition. The
famous spectator-friendly but car-cruel Water Crossing at the end of SS1
often determines a number of rallyists' fortunes, with as much as 10% of the
field retiring, sometimes in the creek! But last year, machines ruled the
land because not one car was lost in the creek, a first in the 26-year history
of the Rally.
· Team Subaru is still looking for its first victory of the 2003 campaign
after two DNF's at Sno*Drift and a second-place finish by Lovell. Lovell's
teammate, Ramana Lagemann, who had the other DNF, has yet to place higher
than fifth this year.
· After the blistering pace set in the Open Class by Mitsubishi drivers
through the first two events this season, expect absolute, flat-out driving
and intense service area action as Team Subaru attempts to climb back into
the points battle and win its first ProRally of the season.

Start Order & Late Breaking News:
SCCA ProRally Championship Round 3
Susquehannock Trail
WELLSBORO, Pennsylvania - The field is set at 64 and conditions are near perfect
for the start of the 27th-consecutive Susquehannock Trail Rally, the oldest
continuously active SCCA ProRally Championship event in the country. The one-day
event will be held on Pennsylvania state forest roads in the "Endless Mountains"
to the South and West of Wellsboro. The rally starts Saturday morning, at
10:31 AM EST sharp, following a 90-minute open-to-the-public Parc Expose of all rally
cars entered. Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ramana Lagemann, seeking for his first
career victory, will lead the field into the lush, but wet "Endless Mountains" Forests.
Late Breaking News:
Weather: Competitors and event staff alike have been holding their collective breath
this week while determining whether or not the Stoney Creek Water Crossing at the end
of Special Stage One will be part of the rally as recent rains have pushed the water
level to the maximum. Clear skies on Friday helped lower the creek and with rain not
forecast until Saturday afternoon, the Water Crossing was declared a go by the event
organizers late Friday afternoon, but steady rains returned overnight, and at 8:AM
this morning, the stage was cancelled due to rapidly rising waters.
2002 British Rally Champion Jonny Milner will begin his belated run at the Group N
Championship on Saturday after competing in the Open Class in the first two rounds of
the ProRally Championship. Originally scheduled to run in Group N all season, his car
was not ready prior to this weekend. Milner begins his quest already 16 points behind
both Mark Utecht and Shane Mitchell, who are tied for the Group N Class lead.
Eight-time John Woolf Cup winner Paul Choiniere drew the number two position in the
start order for Saturday. STPR is Choiniere's and long-time co-driver Jeff Becker's
first event of the 2003 season.
Leon Styles, who finished fourth at Rim of the World - his best finish ever in Rally
competition, had a rod thrown through the block in Friday's practice stage, and was
likely to withdraw from the event, but secured a Mitsubishi Eclipse late last night
and will be able to start.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HIGGINS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT, CHOINIERE RETURNS TO PODIUM
SCCA ProRally Championship Round 3 - Susquehannock Trail
WELLSBORO, Pa. ( June 8, 2003 ) - One is a good start. Two is special.
Three is David Higgins. After starting sixth on Saturday morning, the
U.K. native systematically made his way to the top spot and notched his
third-consecutive 2003 SCCA ProRally Championship win for Mitsubishi
Team Motorsports America at the Susquehannock Trail ProRally (STPR).
Higgins and co-driver Daniel Barritt won the race by more than six
minutes over second-place finishers Tim O’Neil, and Alex Gelsomino. In
his first event of the 2003 Championship season, Paul Choiniere re-united
with long-time co-driving partner Jeff Becker and finished nearly four
minutes behind O’Neil in third. The podium appearances were firsts for
both drivers this year. Visiting Canadian Group N Class Drivers Peter
Thomson and championship regular Mark Utecht completed the top five.
"The car was fantastic," said Higgins, who also padded his John Woolf Cup
(Drivers’ Championship) standings lead with the win. "It ran well. We
took care of the small electrical problem we had after the morning
session and everything after that was A-1."
"We had an excellent choice of equipment for each of the weather
conditions, and even though it got a bit foggy at the end, we were able
to get through it."
Only 37 of the 64 cars that began the race made it through the slick,
muddy roads of the Pennsylvania countryside to the finish. Not in that
group, for the second time this season, were both Subaru Rally Team USA
entries. Team Subaru came into the weekend determined to shrink the
Manufacturers’ Championship point separation between themselves and
Team Mitsubishi, but that opportunity vanished early as both Mark Lovell
and Ramana Lagemann suffered clutch failures and were forced to turn in
a pair of DNFs.
Higgins’ teammate, Lauchlin O’Sullivan, was in prime condition to make
it a Mitsubishi sweep of the weekend, but in Special Stage Six (SS6),
his radiator broke, and with that, suffered the first Team Mitsubishi
DNF of the year.
Also felled by the course was Jonny Milner, who was vying for his first
Group N class victory of the season after competing in the Open class at
the first two events of the year. Milner, who hopped into second overall
after O’Sullivan’s mechanical failure, was in second place going into
stage eight of the 10-stage rally. However, a suspension wishbone
failed, finishing his evening and handing the Group N win to Thomson.
In other classes, Eoin McGeough, along with co-driver Pauric Connolly,
won the Production GT class in their Subaru Impreza WRX and finished
tenth overall, the only PGT car in the top 20. Driving their Volkswagen
Golf GTi, Chris Havas and co-driver Dave Kean captured the Group 5 win
while finishing 11th overall and Eric Burmeister, along with Cindy
Krolikowski, was solid all event long in winning Group 2 and earning
much needed Manufacturer points for Mazda, finishing 16th overall.
In the Production Class, Mike Halley’s Volkswagen New Beetle was the
last car standing out of three entries while he came in 36th.
Round Four of the 2003 SCCA ProRally Championship heads to the Rocky
Mountains for the 81st "Run to the Clouds" at the Falken Tire Pike’s
Peak International Hill Climb, June 28. For more information for this
event, visit www.scca.com or www.ppihc.com.
