RUI BRASIL WINS FIRST-EVER SCCA/MICHELIN PRO RALLY; PRESCOTT FOREST EVENT
DRAWS SMALL, BUT FIESTY GROUP AS SEASON WINDS DOWN TO LAST TWO EVENTS
PRESCOTT, AZ -- October 6 -- As SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally competitors could
only pick up 60 percent of the usual points, many of the top competitors
did not attend the Prescott Forest Rally on October 5 - 6, but the San
Jose, Calif. team of Rui Brasil and co-driver Carlos Tavares are glad they
came as they swept to a 13-second win in their Audi Quattro.
Brasil, originally from rally-rich Portugal, was the fastest competitor
entered with his 300 horsepower Quattro, but he lost three minutes to the
leaders on the very first stage with a flat tire, and fought an uphill
battle to gain the win. Second overall and first in Group 2 was the
Burbank, Calif.-based Volvo 240 of Bill Malik/Farina O'Sullivan, while
Paula Gibeault, from Ridgecrest, CA, and Dan Sherwood were third in a
Subaru 4WD.
In the other classes, Roger Hull/Sean Galagher won the Production GT
class in their Eagle Talon; and Lon Peterson/Bill Gutzmann solidified
their hold on first place in the season-long Production class points by
the victory in that class in their Kia Sephia. There were no Group 5
finishers.
In the Divisional standings, brothers Jeff Griffin and Chris Griffin took
overall honors in their Volvo 142.
The 1996 SCCA/Michelin PRO Rally Series consists of eleven events, and is
sponsored by Michelin Tire Corporation, and sanctioned by the Sports Car
Club of America. The 1996 Prescott Forest Rally was presented by
Arizona Region of the Sports Car Club of America. The next event on the
schedule is the Lake Superior PRO Rally in Houghton, Mich., October 19-20.
