HOW A PRO RALLY WORKS:
Each team consists of a driver and a co-driver (or navigator), and the
exact course is kept secret until just before the event - different from
World Rally, where practice and course notes are allowed). The cars start
at one-minute intervals and race against the clock over 11 stages
(competition course consisting of closed public roads) which range in length
from four to 25 miles. Most of the rallies include night stages, making it
necessary for competitors to adjust their driving style. Speeds of more
than 120 miles-per-hour could be reached on long straight-aways, with the
team going the fastest over the competition course winning the rally.

With approximately 2/3 of the Doo Wops PRO Rally completed
(60 of the 83 stage miles were run today), Paul Choiniere and
Jeff Becker, with their brand-new Hyundai Tiburon 4WD rally
car, have a 1-3/4 minute lead over the Mitsubishi Lancer
Evolution II of Henry Joy and Michael Fennell.
In sloppy conditions in the Capitol Forest south and east of
Olympia, Washington, Choiniere is driving the Hyundai for the
very first time after car owner John Buffum piloted the car
briefly in the snow last month in Canada. Buffum reports the
car is running well in its first real test, and characterized
this opportunity to run before the national season starts in
ernest as "money in the bank."
Top runner in the "non-FIA-seed" class is the Toyota Supra of
Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes, who are leading Group 5 and posted
the divisional win for Doo Wops III, ahead of the Toyota All-
trac of Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge, who are leading
Production GT. Ms. Damitio's All-trac, a 1988 model, would
have been ineligible for PGT this year, but a recent rule
change eliminated the "eight-years-or-newer" requirement for
the class.
The factory Saab 900 of Sam Bryan/Rob Walden dropped out of
the fray early with undetermined mechanical problems, while
Doug Schrenk/Bill Kjorvestad - driving Bryan's old Saab -
rolled their racer and had to drop out.
No other scores or class standings have come in yet - we will
post them as soon as we get them. The Doo Wops IV - and the
continuation of the national contest - starts tomorrow
morning and ends late afternoon Pacific time.
--Andy Schupack
(thanks to John Nagel, Ralph Kosmides, Ray Damitio, and Ben
Bradley for this information - this is an update from the
first posting).
After one day of rallying, or 60 of the 83-stage miles
completed for round #2 of the 1997 Michelin PRO Rally
Championship, the new Hyundai Tiburon 4WD of Paul Choiniere
and Jeff Becker has 1;08 lead over the Mitsubishi Lancer
Evolution II of Henry Joy/Michael Fennell. Joy did not run
the first event of the year - SNO*DRIFT - because he was the
organizer, while Choiniere skipped the event because his new
car wasn't ready. SNO*DRIFT was won by Canadians Frank and
Dan Sprongl in an Audi Quattro S-2. Both Sprongl and Carl
Merrill, who DNFed at SNO*DRIFT, along with Selcuk
Karamanoglu, Tom Ottey, Henry Joy and Paul Choiniere, are
expected at the Wild West event in Washington next month,
along with Open class newcomer Mike Whitman in a Ford Sierra
Cosworth.
Running third after day one at Doo Wops are the defending
national divisional champions Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge
in their Toyota All-Trac. Ms. Damitio, who has won two of
the three divisional events in the four-rally Doo Wop
"series," also topped the divisional catagory and leads the
national Production GT class. Only three seconds behind,
fourth overall, and first in Group 5, is the Toyota Supra of
Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes. Kosmides closed the gap between
him and Janice in the last several stages, but a virtual tie
on the last stage kept Janice just ahead.
The factory Saab 900 of Sam Bryan/Rob Walden, coming off
their Group 5 victory to end last year's campaign, lost his
differential on stage #3, and was forced to drop out of
contention. The Mazda 323GTX of Jack Brodhead/Jim Jump
rolled their car on stage #1, was was also a Saturday DNF.
In the divisional event, as we already mentioned,
Damitio/Trowbridge edged Kosmides/Noyes for first place,
while the Audi Quattro of Rui Brasil/Carlos Tavares, plagued
with a bent driver's side A-arm from an early-rally shunt,
was third, 1:15 seconds back. Kosmides/Noyes did win the O2
class victory, while the Todd Hartmann/Kirk Knestis VW GTI
was victorious in U2.
Divisional DNFs included the Tim Paterson/Joel Wright Mazda
323GTX - broken brake rotor; Doug Schrenk/Bob Walden
Saab 900 - rollover; Debbie Sjodin/Geoff Case Plymouth
Arrow - fuel pump failure; Neville Green/Angela Romeo Merkur
XRTi - broken oil line.
Sorry the entry list/results previously posted are missing
some hometowns - the organizer never provided a final entry.
If anyone receiving this can fill in the blanks, please send
info by e-mail.

CHOINIERE DEBUTS WORLD'S FIRST HYUNDAI TIBURON RACER;
SCORES MICHELIN PRO RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY AT WET WASHINGTON RALLY
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- March 17 -- It was the first competition appearance in
the world for the 1997 Hyundai Tiburon, and Paul Choiniere/Jeff Becker
drove the 4WD, 370 horsepower racer to a three-minute win in the second
round of the Michelin PRO Rally Championship, the Doo Wops PRO rally, in
rainy Washington state.
Choiniere, from Shelburne, VT. has won the national PRO Rally title six of
the last seven years, but faces stiff competition this year from a trio of
similarly-powered all-wheel-drive cars, including the right-hand-drive
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution II of Henry Joy/Michael Fennell, who finished
second.
The Toyota Supra of Ralph Kosmides/Joe Noyes was third overall and winner
of the Group 5 class, while the Janice Damitio/Amity Trowbridge Toyota All-
trac was fourth overall and winner in Production GT. In the separately-
scored divisional event, Kosmides outdistanced the field in both the
Saturday and Sunday Doo Wops events.
The factory Saab 900 of Sam Bryan/Rob Walden, trying to build on their
victory at the final event last November, lost their differential early
in the event and were forced to retire.
The 1997 Michelin PRO Rally Championship, an SCCA series, consists of
ten events, is sponsored by Michelin Tire Corporation, and sanctioned by
the Sports Car Club of America. The next event on the schedule is the Wild
West PRO Rally in Olympia, Washington, April 11 - 13.
